Excellent & Useful Design! Lasts for Years! May 24, 2009 M. Corvin (Skiatook, Oklahoma) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I have owned a Poulan Twist N' Edge for over 5 years and it is quite an ingenious product. The Twist N' Edge is so useful and is a big time saver. The integrated metal guide by the cutting head helps you simply rest the trimmer on the edge of a curb or sidewalk for a perfect edging job. Push the button, flip the edger head with a movement of your wrists (imagine putting a hula-hoop on the end of a broomstick and making it loop round and round - that movement) and you are in trimmer mode. A truly great product. I have never had mine serviced and have never replaced anything and it still runs like a charm. A little tough to get started, especially after sitting all winter, but once you get it started, if you need to turn it off to go inside for a drink, when you come back out it will start right up with one or two pulls max. The no-tap centrifugal force-powered line head is very cool and always doles out the perfect length of line. There is a small learning curve on the line head in regards to putting the metal ring on correctly (notch-up) and how tight you put it on (too loose and your line comes out too fast; too tight and not at all). Buy this trimmer!
UPDATE: I would like to mention that, for the most part, this is the same edger I used to use. However, Poulan has revised the overall design a bit. The tank is smaller and sleeker and the gas tank is more easily accessible. My one complaint is that they have curved the shaft more than it used to be so I have to hold it a bit differently to edge, which I don't like. I feel as if I have to lean over at a weird angle. I still like it overall.

No more twisted line on a spool! Quit using string trimmer's till I saw my neighbor trimming away without stopping every 2 mins. to untwist the line. Talked to him and he said this was the answer. It is!
Works great!! May 4, 2010 Samanda Lynn Parker 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product works great.I like the wat it cuts the weeds, easy to use, not as hard on my back as other weedeaters.
excellenct value November 11, 2009 KITTY (KITTY) very easy to use. the twist feature makes it easy. lightweight great for residential use.
Perfect for residential use August 13, 2010 Eric I cannot imagine someone being disappointed by this if they are using it for residential purposes. Its light, has just the right amount of power and is easy to use. I have not had any problems with it while it's in idle, etc. To start, prime it a few times by pushing the clear rubber half ball thingy (as you can tell....I'm VERY savvy in the yard tool department, heck almost an engineer!), put it on full choke and give it a few pulls with the throttle held down. After about 2-3 pulls your good to go....just remember to take the choke off quickly or it'll die. Also, since the manual recommends holding down the throttle while doing this that means that the string is spinning as it's started. This can be a problem if you are laying the end on the grass. I took out a small circular area of lawn doing this before I realized that I should just rest the trimmer on top of my fence while I start it (the fence makes contact half way up the shaft so when the string starts spinning it's just in mid air). If you have a tall fence I suppose a deck, BBQ/smoker, child play center or toddler would work fine to rest it on. Just make sure that toddler doesn't MOVE! The curved shaft makes it easy to stand at a comfortable angle while trimming.
The fact that it rotates to double as an edger is great. That's one of the main things I was looking for in a trimmer. It works, however, I have found it rather difficult to edge accurately with it. The metal brace/guide on the front does not seem to serve me well in this capacity. The edging ability of this is just as good as any trimmer, maybe a little better since it actually rotates for you.....giving you a more comfortable position while edging. If you want to have great edges with ease......buy an edger.
The line is auto feed, which was a requirement for me in my trimmer. I have used the kind that you have to tap to get more line out and I hate that. I don't know about you, but I don't have a slab of concrete every 20 feet in my yard. This means I'm tapping on the actual lawn every time I need more line. By the time I'm done trimming it looks like my backyard has been visited by extraterrestrials.....due to the crop circles. I LOVE the auto feed capability. Also, re-spooling more line could not be easier. It doesn't even hook in anywhere. You just start feeding it in, attach it to the trimmer and centrifugal force does the rest for you. I love it. I also like the fact that there is only line sticking out from ONE side of the head. Many trimmers have two lines sticking out. I have used these and find them to be harder to control and the extra line is unnecessary. Inevitably one line is angled wrong, grips the lawn and the head of the trimmer takes OFF! Leaving some weird marks in your lawn. This is mostly a problem if you are trying to be a little more delicate in your trimming efforts, say, around a flower bed, etc. I find one line to be plenty and much easier to control.
All in all, this is the perfect trimmer. I would recommend it to any regular Joe that is looking to do regular Joe things with it. If you own a bunch of land (as in multiple acres that all needs trimming) or are doing large commercial jobs, look elsewhere.
OH! Please, wear earplugs when you are using ANY trimmer. Most are 2 stroke engines which are very loud at that close of a range. Without earplugs you are definitely damaging your hearing permanently. Sorry for the public service announcement, my father is an ENT Doctor
