5 out of 5 stars Great Value   April 25, 2010

Why spend $189 at Home Depot when you can get this for $99? The trimmer arrived and was in like new condition. It started right up and runs great. It has plenty of power. Best of all, no more keeping gas and oil mix around. The down side is that since it is a 4-stroke with an OIL pan of sorts, the edger only operates in the basic trimming position. It you tilt it too much in any direction, oil will enter the cylinder and start smoking. If you continue to run this way, the engine will stall and oil will run out of the carborater. So what this means is it is not very friendly for attachements such as hedge clippers or chain saws and such that you need to run at varying angles.

I am fine with this because I really just need this for the basics. I have the edger, trimmer and blower attachments, and they all work great.

5 out of 5 stars Great trimmer! Love the four-stroke engine and being able to use different attachments   May 14, 2010

This is the third Ryobi four-stroke trimmer that I've owned, and this one seems to be as good, or better actually, than my previous ones. I picked this one up on Amazon (factory-reconditioned) for half of what a shiny new new one would have cost. It came in a plain brown box, but I can't see any obvious signs of use on it, so I think it was a fantastic deal (hint: get it while you can!). I purchased my first Ryobi four-stroke trimmer several years ago because I was intrigued by the idea of a four-stroke trimmer plus being able to use different attachments. It was a good decision, for many reasons. First, if you have only one engine and multiple attachments, then there is only one engine to maintain. This is important. I remember the (not-so good 'ole?) days of having separate tools; a weed eater, leaf blower, edger, etc, each with it's own two-stroke engine. The tool that was used the least always took the longest to get running. This is typical of small two-stroke engines. If you don't drain the the unused gasoline back into the gas can and then run the engine until the carburetor is dry, the unused gas/oil that is left in the carburetor will sludge up in a few days. If you don't use the tool again before this happens, you'll end up having to take the carburetor apart and clean it before the engine will run again. I haven't had this problem since since switching to Ryobi four-stroke trimmers. It's still a good practice to pour the unused gasoline back into the gas can and run the engine until the carburetor is dry on any small engine, but since you don't mix oil and gas with four-stroke engines, the sludging problem takes longer to happen and thus isn't as big of a concern. In fact, during the summer mowing season, I don't always bother with doing this, since I am using the trimmer every couple of weeks or so. Also, since you don't mix gas and oil, the engine produces less smoke, and also less noise. Plus, you have only one gas can, not a separate "special" gas can with oil mixed in it just for your grass trimmer.

As I said earlier, this is my third Ryobi four-stroke trimmer. I've gotten around five to six years of hard use out of each of the previous models before I chose to replace them, generally due to overall wear and tear and increased maintenance time. About every year or two, I've have to replace the fuel line and the fuel primer bulb. The fuel tends to cause these items to dry rot. I think this is a common issue with all weed trimmers and should be considered routine maintenance. With this model, the engine has plenty of power. The attachments that I use are the grass trimmer, edger, blower, and garden tiller. My blower attachment is a Poulan brand ($40 at Wal-mart), and yes, you can often use different brands of attachments with this, since several brands of grass trimmers use the same type of attachment connection. The main "shortcoming" with this model, and all of the previous models I've had is this: I'm 5'11", and the shaft "feels" like it is too short for my height. I've really, really wished the shaft on this trimmer as well as my previous units was about a foot longer, like a commercial-grade trimmer. I suspect this would be an issue for me with almost any consumer-grade trimmer, but if you're taller than 5'6", I'd recommend buying a trimmer with a straight shaft instead of a curved shaft. Straight shaft trimmers have a longer shaft that will feel more comfortable to use for a normal or tall person. This one has a straight shaft and my previous models had curved shafts, and yes, I like the straight shaft better due to the extra length. Other than the shaft feeling a little short for my height, it's a great trimmer.

5 out of 5 stars Good 4 cycle trimmer   April 23, 2010

I purchased this 4 cycle trimmer after having a Ryobi 790R for almost 10 years. It also was a refurbished unit. I still use it to this day, but decided I wanted to have a nicer one for the lighter work. The price can not be beat!

First things first. The trimmer head was not a bump head as it says in the Product Features. Instead it as a Pro-Cut II(tm) String Head Assembly. Kind of useless for me but I am sure it is fine for a city yard that does not grow blackberry brambles. I purchased a Gator bump head to replace the Proc-Cut the day the trimmer arrived.

The trimmer was easy to assemble. It was missing the bolt for the handle (rough shipping had the bag and box tore), but it is a standard bolt so I had one laying around. Before I added the oil, I pulled the plug and drained what was left of the old oil. Then I put in the 10w30 oil as specified, checked the level, filled the tank with gas, and we were ready to go.

Starting was much easier than my older 2-cycle trimmers. I flipped the switch up, primed it 7 times as specified, flipped it down, and pulled the cord (without holding the trigger). It started first pull. Then I waited the 15 seconds they recommended and then pulled the trigger to rev it up. The switch returned to run position as it was supposed to and I was able to run it. It took about 2 minutes to warm up and run smoother.

Trimming was powerful. The machine is much quieter, lighter, and has less vibration than my 790R. The balance is fine also. I think i will put on a better trimmer handle in the future. I am partial to the big long handles and a harness. Sometimes I trim my pasture fences for several hours. Power was not an issue at all. I often noticed I was not even revving it up as I should because it was running strong enough at half throttle. Dropping from full throttle to idle did not kill mine. I am used to that so I normally reduce my speed smoothly but I did not have to with this one.

The negatives...
I am not sure I like how the gas tank mounts. The gas lines are much better than the older styles but the tank is mounted in an area that exposes it to leverage if it catches on something while in use.

The trimmer output shaft assembly is not as sturdy as my old one and it has more exposed moving mass. This caused it to get wound up with grass faster than others. I had to clear it a few times.

The head that comes with it is not a good head for use around a lot of fences or brambles. The line wears too fast and then you have to stop to reload the head. A bump head is much more useful for me.

All in all, I think this is a great unit and am very happy I purchased it!

5 out of 5 stars Known as "The Beast"...   May 4, 2010

We live in a weed-eater intensive environment. The whole neighborhood works together to clean up our properties in Spring. We have Husqvarna, Tanaca, Poulan and many other weed-eaters at our disposal. My Ryobi 4 stroke is known affectionately among my neighbors as "the beast". We feed it premium gasoline and run it till the tank runs dry before we stop. It has a small tank that goes for about 1/2 hour as opposed to our other weed-eaters that go for about an hour on a tank. Leaving gas in a 4 stroke weed-eater over time seems to be our biggest problem. I purchased the cultivator attachment for it thinking that it would probably be a joke...wrong! The cultivator kicks butt...yours, and the dirt's. It's not fun to work, but it delivers on churning up the soil. You turn it lose on raw dirt and it bucks a few times and then digs in. Pull it backwards and it just digs deeper. A very clean and effective tool.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product for the Price   May 12, 2010

I ordered this on Amazon from CPO Ryobi and it arrived within 3 days. The product looked like new and was very easy to assemble and within 15 minutes I had it put together, added the oil and fueled up. ONE pull and it fired right up, I let it idel for a couple of minutes and the hit the power and bamm loads of power. The unit is light enough I can hold it with no issues but it would be nice to have a shoulder strap and will be purchasing one. From my experience with this purchase I would recommend this unit from this company and it works perfectly thus far.
